Marc Marquez moved closer to the 2026 MotoGP title by winning the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang on Sunday. The Ducati Lenovo rider converted a front-row start into his seventh Grand Prix victory of the season, finishing 4.172 seconds ahead of Pedro Acosta, while younger brother Alex Marquez took third after starting from pole. The result leaves Marc 44 points clear of Jorge Martin, who missed the race through injury, and gives him a chance to clinch the championship at next weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix. It was his first Malaysian GP win since 2018.

Marc Marquez takes control early

Marc started second but reacted quickly when the lights went out, moving ahead of Alex into the opening corner. The Gresini rider hit back at Turn 4, only to run wide and surrender the lead. Marc held his line and began to stretch the gap. The pressure was real, yet Marc never once looked rushed. By lap five, he was around half a second clear. That advantage grew to 1.5 seconds by lap 10, leaving the fight for second as the main contest. Acosta had been pressuring Alex and made his move at Turn 9 on lap 10. The KTM rider took second, but Marc was already out of reach. The Spaniard completed the 20 laps in 40 minutes and 14.236 seconds. Acosta finished 4.172 seconds later, with Alex another 1.783 seconds behind. The win gave Marc his 80th premier-class victory and a third Malaysian Grand Prix triumph.

Ogura finishes ahead of Bezzecchi

Ai Ogura brought his Trackhouse Aprilia home in fourth after a late clash with Marco Bezzecchi at Turn 2. Bezzecchi dropped back and lost another place to Enea Bastianini on the final lap. Bastianini finished fifth, ahead of the Aprilia rider in sixth. Luca Marini took seventh for Honda, followed by Fabio Di Giannantonio, Brad Binder and Franco Morbidelli. Fabio Quartararo was the leading Yamaha rider in 11th, with teammate Alex Rins 12th. Francesco Bagnaia finished 13th, more than 32 seconds behind his Ducati teammate. Johann Zarco, Diogo Moreira and Augusto Fernandez did not finish. Zarco retired with a technical problem, Moreira crashed, and Fernandez fell early. Joan Mir missed the race through illness.

Qatar offers Marquez his first title chance

Marc now has 399 points, 44 more than Martin, while Bezzecchi is 67 points behind in third. Martin’s absence followed the wrist injury he sustained at the Australian Grand Prix. His return matters to the title battle, but the gap leaves Marc in a strong position. The Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled for 6-8 November, is next. Marquez cannot rely on winning alone to secure the crown; he must extend his advantage over his remaining mathematical rivals. A 74-point lead would put the title beyond reach with two rounds left. Bezzecchi remains in contention, so Marc cannot afford to ease off. Sepang has given the Ducati rider breathing room and a clear target. Another strong weekend could turn his title pursuit into a championship celebration.
