India completed one of the best successful run chases in men’s ODI history on 30th September 2026 in ODI’s on a memorable day by defeating West Indies by eight wickets at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. India scored 406/2 in 43.3 overs after West Indies scored 406/7 in 50 overs. India chased the target in just 39 balls remaining in 43.3 overs. The result gave India their highest successful run chase in men’s ODI. India became the only second team to chase a target of more than 400 in the format. 7,507 days ago, the other team that scored more than 400 to win in a successful chase was South Africa, when South Africa chased 435 against Australia in the famous 2006 Johannesburg ODI.

India Chase Down 406 With 39 Balls To Spare

The Indian batting innings had limited margin for error after the West Indies posted 405/7, but the chase was soon tilting in the hosts' direction. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma built a magnificent partnership to ensure the required run rate was never a serious problem. Rohit spoke about his hundred, chasing the game while he scored 101 before India kept applying pressure on West Indies bowling. Gill reached another milestone in his career, getting to his double hundred and ending not out on 223.

India eventually finished on 406/2 in 43.3 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad was still not alongside Gill and such was India’s winning effort that they had won the game by eight wickets. The chase also broke the previous record for highest successful run chase by India. The previous record was made at 362 against Australia in Jaipur 2013.

Shubman Gill Leads The Record-Breaking Chase

Gill was the central figure in India's response.The Indian captain fell just short of history, with an unbeaten 223, his second double century in One Day International and only the second player behind Rohit Sharma to record two double centuries in the format. Gill scored the century from 62 balls and kept the momentum going after scoring the 3rd figures. Gill scored the double century from 117 balls, which stands as the fastest double century in the history of ODI cricket. Gill’s innings contained 24 fours and 7 sixes.

Two days later, Gill scored 110 in the first of the three match series ODIs. Gill performance in Guwahati was instrumental in sealing India’s comfortable 2-0 lead in series.

West Indies Post 405 After Three Centuries

The target looked enormous when West Indies finished their innings on 405/7. Their top order produced three centuries in the same ODI, with John Campbell scoring 101, Shai Hope making 104 and Amir Jangoo adding 114. The three hundreds helped West Indies record their highest ODI total against India. Their previous best against India had been 333, scored in 1983. The 405/7 total also gave the visitors a strong position before India began the chase.

For a period, West Indies had every reason to believe they had posted a total capable of deciding the match. India, however, turned the contest into a batting-dominated chase from the opening overs.

India Become First Team To Chase 400-Plus Since 2006

The importance of India’s win stretches beyond their own team record. The 406 chase ended more than 20 years of waiting for another successful chase of a 400-plus target in men’s ODI cricket. On March 12, 2006, South Africa beat Australia, who had scored 434/4 at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, by chasing down 438/9. South Africa finished on the winning side, with one wicket remaining and 1 ball to spare. Since that match, several teams have crossed 400 while batting first, but none had successfully chased a target above 400 until India’s effort in Guwahati. Sri Lanka came close in 2009 when they scored 411/8 against India in Rajkot, but they lost by three runs.

India 406/2 sets a new record as the second-highest successful run chase in ODIs. It is the second-highest run chase by any team in world history, but not a world record. Since South Africa’s 438 against Australia in 2006, no team has chased 400 runs. The Guwahati contest also produced one of the rarest combinations in ODI cricket: three centuries from one side, followed by a successful chase featuring a double century and another hundred. For India, the victory was both a series-clinching result and a new entry in the ODI record books.
