The former India captain Virat Kohli became the quickest ever to reach 15000 in this format and then levelled with Sachin Tendulkar on another major one-day record. Virat's 139 not out against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram took his list count to 60, alongside great man Sachin Tendulkar, and all of this was in a successful chase that gave India an eight-wicket win and a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Kohli Breaks Tendulkar’s 15,000 ODI-Run Record

Kohli crossed 15,000 ODI runs in run chases versus West Indies, just his second after Tendulkar. Even faster, it took him just 303 innings, beating the record of 377 innings previously set by the Indian legend. Cricbuzz had recorded the milestone at 61 runs during kohli innings, while the ICC announced that he was now the fastest man to reach 15,000 runs in men’s ODIs. The milestone appears to be a recurring theme in his ODI career. Before the 15,000 runs mark, he was also the quickest player to get from 8,000 to 14,000 runs.

After the innings, he had totalled 15080 runs based on the ICC post-match records. Tendulkar still sits at the top of the list of total runs scored in ODIs, having finished his international career with 18,426 runs in 463 matches. Kohli's recent milestone moves him into a group that only two batters have reached.

Kohli Equals Sachin’s List A Centuries Record

Kohli did not stop at the ODI milestone. His 139 not out was his 55th ODI century and his 60th hundred in List A cricket. List A cricket includes one-day internationals and domestic 50-over matches too. Cricbuzz reported that Kohli has now scored 60 List A hundreds in 338 innings. Tendulkar also ended with 60 centuries but in 538 innings. Kohli List A record currently stands at 16,730 runs in 338 innings, with 88 fifties apart from his 60 centuries.

Kohli List A centuries, which come in a different context, are worth identifying also. Fifty-five have come for India in ODIs, while only five have been scored at domestic level for Delhi. His recent hundred against West Indies brought him equal with Tendulkar in the overall List A century. Tendulkar’s List A career ended in 2012 after 551 matches and 538 innings. He scored 21,999 runs, 60 hundreds and 114 fifties. Comparing kohli career to this record, Kohli reached the same number of hundreds in fewer innings than Tendulkar.

Kohli’s 139 Sets Up India’s Comfortable Chase

The records came during an innings that finally concluded the first-ever international limited-overs match (ODI). West Indies scored a total of 295/7 in 50 overs following an innings of 101 from Justin Greaves and 62 from John Campbell. Kuldeep Yadav was India's leading wicket-taker, finishing with 4/40 in 10 overs. This also signalled the beginning of a good series for India as they won the first of the three matches. The hosts took an advantage of 1-0 by comfortably chasing the target with Gill and Kohli.

India started their chase with a 74-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Rohit was dismissed for 32, which brought in Kohli. Gill and Kohli added 151 runs for the second wicket, thereby leaving the game out of reach of the opposition. Gill scored his own century, 110 off 108 balls with 13 fours and a six. During the innings, Kohli increased the run rate and finished on 139 from 88 balls. His innings included 10 fours and nine sixes, with the last one sealing the victory. India finished on 300 for two in 41.4 overs to win by 8 wickets.

Another Tendulkar Record Comes Into Sight

Kohli’s 60th List A century means Tendulkar’s long-standing record is no longer his alone. The next List A hundred will give Kohli the outright record for most centuries in the format. That gives even more weight to a day that is already set to be defined by the 15,000-run landmark. His 55th ODI hundred means he is now also looking comfortable in surpassing Tendulkar in ODI centuries. The Indian legend finished on 49 in the format, and so Kohli has 6 more.
