Weather resumed the next day, and Sri Lanka Vs Nepal and Bangladesh Vs Malaysia were called off too. As a result, the semi-finals have been set after the quarter-finals, with only two semi-finalists: India Vs Sri Lanka and Pakistan Vs Bangladesh.

Rain reshapes the Asian Games Knockout Stage

The recent washouts have made weather the most popular subject of conversation in the men’s Cricket World Cup. Sri Lanka had a walkover semi-final after the Nepal quarter-final was washed out, as the higher-ranked team gets through as per competition regulations. Bangladesh had a walkover to the semi-finals, having faced rain in their game against Malaysia. India also progressed to the semi-final stage after its quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned owing to rain. Pakistan’s journey was similar after the match against Hong Kong, which was abandoned due to rain. So, the four quarter-final matches have left India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh in the running for the gold.

Nepal’s departure was really disappointing. The side had performed well in the group stages, including a victory over Afghanistan, but was denied the opportunity to take part in its quarter-final. The same was the case with Malaysia, which was not allowed to take the field in the quarter-final against Bangladesh.

India to Face Sri Lanka in Semi-Final

India will come up against Sri Lanka in the first semi-final on October 1, 2026, with Pakistan taking on Bangladesh in the last four encounter on the same date. The matches have been fixed at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. India was the defending Asian Games champion, having won gold in 2018 in Hangzhou. Despite the 2026 Games still not having seen a game in the men’s competition, India’s quarter-final was abandoned. Along with that, Sri Lanka qualified for the semi-final through the same rain-raveged process after their match was abandoned, which leaves us with both semi-finalists not having a completed quarter-final. Its pathway has been similar. Pakistan has been granted a bye into the semi-final after their quarter-final was abandoned in the match against Hong Kong, China. As a result, Bangladesh benefited in the same manner, as they qualified for the semi-finals after their quarter-final abandonment in the match against Malaysia.

India Vs Pakistan On the Way?

An India Vs Pakistan is still possible, though. But still, it is subject to the semi-final games also being affected. If the India-Sri Lanka semi-final is washed out, then India will go through. Thanks to the higher T20 ranking, the Pakistan-South Africa semi-final will send Pakistan to the final ahead of Bangladesh. This would place India and Pakistan in the final on October 3, 2026. An interesting proposition, but one which at this stage only exists as a possible scenario. Both semi-finals are yet to be played or decided based on tournament regulations.

Another element brought in by the weather forecast. If the rain were to continue in the build-up to semi-final day, there would have been more concerns, and this would have meant that no cricket was played in any of the four quarter-finals.

What happens if the final is washed out?

The 2026 regulations also do not quit the match the old situation in the Asian Games. In 2022, India were awarded the gold in Hangzhou when the final against Afghanistan was abandoned without a result, with India through as the higher-seeded team. The conditions for the 2026 competition do not have the same outcome for the final. The same eventuality for the gold-medal match, in case it is washed out, would be to award the two finalists the gold medal.
