Formula 1 returns to Mexico City this weekend, and the 2026 championship could move closer to its conclusion. Kimi Antonelli arrives at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez with a 123-point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell after winning the United States Grand Prix in Austin. Five rounds remain, leaving the Italian in a strong position. Local fans have another reason to celebrate: Sergio Perez is set for his 300th Grand Prix start, racing for Cadillac at his home event. The F1 Mexico Grand Prix therefore has two major storylines.

F1 Mexico Grand Prix 2026: Schedule and India timings
The race weekend runs from Friday, 30 October, to Sunday, 1 November, at the 4.304km Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The circuit’s high altitude puts demands on cooling and car performance, making practice important. Teams have little room to hide weaknesses this weekend. The Mexican venue is known for its packed stadium section, where the atmosphere often builds as the cars pass through the final sector. For teams, however, the challenge is not only the crowd: thin air at altitude affects downforce, engine cooling and braking, so set-up choices can have a noticeable impact across the weekend. Free Practice 1 is scheduled for 12:00 am IST on Saturday, followed by FP2 at 3:30 am. FP3 begins at 11:00 pm on Saturday. Qualifying starts at 2:30 am on Sunday, while the race gets underway at 1:30 am on Monday. These timings are in Indian Standard Time; the local race takes place on Sunday afternoon in Mexico City.
Antonelli’s title opportunity puts Mercedes in focus
Antonelli’s win in Austin strengthened his position at the top of the Drivers’ Championship. His 123-point cushion over Russell leaves little room for error for the Briton, who needs a major result in Mexico to keep the contest alive. Antonelli can focus on managing the weekend rather than taking unnecessary risks. The pressure is on his rivals. Mercedes also have a chance to secure the Constructors’ Championship. The team holds a 133-point lead over Ferrari, but needs to outscore the Italian outfit by at least 39 points in Mexico to clinch the teams’ title. That adds another target for Mercedes.
Perez reaches 300 starts in front of home fans
Perez’s milestone gives the Mexican Grand Prix a personal story beyond the championship fight. The Cadillac driver will reach 300 Grand Prix starts in front of supporters who have backed him throughout his career. A strong result would make the occasion more memorable, although Cadillac are not currently expected to fight at the front.
