Cristiano Ronaldo is setting the pace in the Ballon d’Or Of All Time (BOAT) fan vote, with his 2008 Manchester United campaign reportedly receiving 62 per cent of votes at the latest count. Lionel Messi’s 2012 season sits second on 13 per cent, leaving a sizable gap between the rivals. The poll, launched by the official award platform, asks supporters to compare individual award-winning seasons rather than choose the greatest player overall. The result remains provisional, not a change to the award’s official record.

What is the BOAT Fan Vote?
BOAT stands for Ballon d’Or of All Time. The competition features ten players who have won the award at least twice, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Ronaldo Nazário, Marco van Basten, Michel Platini, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff and Alfredo Di Stéfano. Voters are asked to select the strongest individual season among these candidates. The poll is scheduled to close at midnight on 27 October, with the final result expected on 28 October. Each vote costs €1, and supporters can vote more than once, including repeatedly for the same player. The paid format means the leaderboard measures participation, not a scientific verdict on Football greatness.
Why Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 season stands out
Cristiano Ronaldo claimed his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 after scoring 42 goals in all competitions for Manchester United. He helped Sir Alex Ferguson’s side win the Premier League and Champions League, scoring in the European final against Chelsea before United prevailed in a penalty shoot-out. That campaign established Ronaldo among Football’s leading players. His 2008 season is now being compared with the peak years of other multiple winners through the poll, rather than judged only by career totals.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s Award Records
Cristiano Ronaldo has won the award five times, with further victories in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017. Lionel Messi has claimed the prize a record eight times, most recently in 2023. The BOAT vote does not alter those figures; it asks a different question about the quality of a single season. Ronaldo first appeared on the award shortlist in 2004 and has 18 nominations, one more than Lionel Messi’s 17, according to reports. However, Messi leads the pair for wins. Their rivalry shaped Football for two decades, alongside eight other legends.

What the result means
Cristiano Ronaldo has not appeared on the award shortlist since 2022 and now plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. His lead in BOAT brings attention back to his first winning season, rather than indicating a return to contention for the current award. Lionel Messi’s second-place position could change before voting closes. The figures show an early preference for Ronaldo’s 2008 campaign, though repeat voting makes the outcome a reflection of fan engagement. The award judges a season, not a career, so the distinction matters. The Ballon d’Or remains the individual honour. Football history weighs peak performance against longevity, and this poll gives fans a way to debate those standards.
