India will have two captains during the ODI leg of the India vs New Zealand Series, with Shubman Gill leading the opening three matches before leaving the squad to prepare for the Tests. Shreyas Iyer will take charge for the final two ODIs, and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been named vice-captain for that phase. Jasprit Bumrah will skip the one-day matches and focus on the Test series.

Shubman Gill Leads the Opening Matches
Shubman Gill will captain the first three games, with Iyer serving as vice-captain. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli feature in the squad, while KL Rahul is listed as wicketkeeper. The group also includes Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kuldeep Yadav. The first three-match group featured Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar. The selection committee, headed by Pragyan Ojha, has otherwise retained much of the core group.
Shreyas Iyer Takes Over for the Last Two ODIs
Tilak Varma, Yash Thakur and Kumar Kushagra have been included only for the fourth and fifth matches. Kushagra, a wicketkeeper-batter, has earned his maiden India call-up. Ishan Kishan will serve as Iyer’s deputy in those games. The latter squad includes Auqib Nabi, alongside Rohit Sharma, Kohli, Siraj, Axar, Kuldeep, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar. The selection gives India additional options for the closing matches of the India ODI schedule.
Jaspreet Bumrah Reserved for the Test Assignment
Bumrah will lead India's pace resources in the red-ball matches, alongside Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Kamboj and Akash Deep, who returns to the Test squad. Rishabh Pant has been selected but must receive fitness clearance before travelling. Dhruv Jurel is the other wicketkeeper in the Test group. Gill captains the Test side too, with KL Rahul as vice-captain. The squad also includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Bumrah’s workload is being managed by keeping him out of the ODI leg.

India vs New Zealand Schedule
The India and New Zealand tour begins with five T20Is on 22, 24, 27 and 30 October, followed by 1 November. The five ODIs are scheduled for 4, 7, 10, 13 and 15 November. The two Tests begin on 19 and 27 November. For India vs New Zealand, the leadership switch is the main selection decision, but the Test squad’s fitness picture also matters. Pant’s clearance remains a condition, and Bumrah’s availability is limited to the longest format. The IND vs NZ ODI fixtures will also give selectors a look at Kushagra and the other players added for the final two games. This gives selectors a chance to review options before the two Tests without changing the leadership plan for the tour.
