India’s women finally won Gold at the Asian Games 2026 after the intense wait of 44 years, as they beat defending champions China 1-0 in a tense final at Kakamigahara in Japan on Friday. Lalre was the architect of the only goal in the 10th minute as she struck a reverse-stick, but the goal was just the start of India’s toughest test yet. China kept on searching for an equaliser and applied pressure on the Indian circle, but the defence held firm, with goalkeeper Savita Punia pulling off a penalty-stroke save to hold on to the narrow lead till the final. The win marked India's second Asian Games title after their 1982 gold & also ensured their ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Lalremsiami Breaks the Deadlock
The Chinese team's demand was good enough & gained possession often, which meant the Indian team had to defend themselves in their own half. Possession built up in the Indian team and they started finding gaps—the equaliser in the 10th minute. Salima Tete moved into the striking circle and found Sakshi Rana, who released the ball towards Lalremsiami—the forward needed little space before sending a reverse-stick shot into the top corner.
The track-off gave India a 1-0 lead, but it was also a milestone, as India continued to look for the 200th cap. By then, Lalremsiami had been on the pitch for her milestone, contributing the single goal India would eventually require. They pressed further, and China responded, but India would not let China have the equaliser before the end of the first quarter.
Savita Punia Denies China
China’s first significant opportunity came during the second quarter, when China was awarded a penalty stroke. Zhang Ying was the taker of the penalty stroke. The attempt was read by Savita Punia, and she made a sprawling save to her left using only one hand. The save kept India in the lead and proved to be a crucial one in the game, where little had been created.
India built up, and Navneet won the ball in the 28th minute from the midfield and took the ball past her marker and looked to pass to an attacker as a Chinese defender headed it out for a throw-in. India held on to their one-goal cushion in the second half.
India Withstand China’s Pressure
The second half became a test of India’s defensive discipline. China continued to make circle entries and looked for a route through the Indian structure, but the backline cleared danger. India had to remain patient as China increased the pressure during the third and fourth quarters. The Indian players maintained their shape and closed down passing lanes. China kept searching for an opening as the final entered its closing stages. India’s defenders made tackles and blocked attempts, ensuring that the Chinese attack could not turn possession into the goal it needed. The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 Indian victory.
The result ends a 44-year wait for India’s women’s hockey team. Their only previous Asian Games gold had come in 1982, when the women’s hockey competition made its debut at the event. India had come close twice since then. The team finished runners-up in 1998 after losing to South Korea and again in 2018, when Japan won the final.

The latest campaign has therefore delivered a second gold medal after decades of near misses. China, which entered the final as defending champions and Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallists, had to settle for silver after failing to find a way past India’s defence.
