Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket, closing a career that began in August 2012. The Australian all-rounder, aged 38, made the announcement on Monday and will not wear the national colours again in any format. He had already stepped away from one-day internationals in June 2025, so this decision covers T20Is and the Test format he last played in 2017. Maxwell leaves with three world titles, a wardrobe of shots few batters would dare try, and one innings that people will keep arguing about for decades.

Glenn Maxwell: Career Record in Numbers

Maxwell played 286 international matches, according to ESPNcricinfo figures reported by IANS, and collected 7,226 runs and 136 wickets. He debuted against Afghanistan in an ODI in August 2012 and played 149 of them in total. Those matches brought 3,990 runs, a best of 201 not out, four centuries and 23 fifties. His strike rate of 126.70 is the second best in ODI history, and he hit 155 sixes along the way. He added 77 wickets with off-spin that opponents tended to underrate.

Test Record and T20I Standing

Maxwell played seven Tests after debuting against India in 2013. His highest score was 104 against India, and his best bowling figures were 4/127. The remaining 130 appearances came in T20Is, and Outlook India reports he holds Australia’s record for most T20I appearances. He has also retired from first-class and List A cricket.

Three World Titles

Maxwell was part of the squads that won the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups, and he was also part of Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning side, which Outlook India counts as his third world title. The 2023 campaign gave him his signature moment. Chasing 292 against Afghanistan in Mumbai on 7 November 2023, Australia were 91 for 7, and Maxwell, battling cramps, finished unbeaten on 201 to win the match. Many regard it as the greatest ODI innings ever played.

What Happens Next

Maxwell will not leave the game entirely. He has renewed his contract with Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League until the 2027/28 season, so Australian crowds will still see him bat. Reflecting on the decision, he noted that international cricket brings a kind of pressure the BBL cannot always match.

Tributes From Cricket Australia

Maxwell’s ODI exit last year drew warm words from the board. Chief executive Todd Greenberg said crowds turned up just to watch him bat and children picked up bats because of him. Chief selector George Bailey described him as one of the most dynamic players the one-day game has seen. Maxwell himself had cited the physical demands of the 50-over format and the lingering effects of a serious leg injury.

Where This Leaves Australia

Australia now moves forward without a batter who could turn a match in a single over and a part-time spinner who often picked up wickets when least expected. Selectors will need to find ways to fill that role in white-ball cricket, and no single player will replicate it. Few will ever bat like him.
