Cristiano Ronaldo 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning season has finished ahead of Lionel Messi’s record-setting 2012 campaign in the B.O.A.T. fan vote, adding a fresh chapter to football’s enduring rivalry. The result, announced after voting closed on 27 October, puts Ronaldo’s Manchester United season first in a poll asking fans to choose the greatest Ballon d’Or-winning campaign. It is a verdict on two specific seasons, not a final answer to the wider argument over which player has had the better career. For supporters, the ranking gives them another reason to debate two extraordinary footballers.

Why 2008 Ronaldo came out on top?
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 42 goals in all competitions for Manchester United during the 2007-08 season. Thirty-one came in the Premier League, where his goals helped Sir Alex Ferguson’s side win the title. United also lifted the Champions League after beating Chelsea on penalties in Moscow, with Ronaldo scoring in the final. Those achievements helped the Portuguese forward claim his first Ballon d’Or in 2008. He was 23 and central to a United side that combined domestic consistency with European success. The 2008 Ronaldo campaign also brought individual honours, including the Premier League Golden Boot and European Golden Shoe.
Messi’s 2012 season was no ordinary rival
Lionel Messi’s second-place finish may surprise anyone who remembers his 2012 numbers. The Barcelona forward scored 91 goals for club and country that calendar year, setting a record that remains one of football’s most remarkable feats. His total covered a calendar year, not a single European season. Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 season featured a major team double, while Messi’s 2012 record rested on a goalscoring total few players have approached. Fans were asked to weigh those achievements for themselves.
What the B.O.A.T. vote actually means
The B.O.A.T., short for Ballon d’Or of All Time, was introduced for the award’s 70th-anniversary celebrations. It invited fans to choose the best season among players who had won the Ballon d’Or at least twice. The vote was separate from the annual award, decided by journalists, and does not create another official Ballon d’Or trophy. Voting ran from 1 to 27 October, with each entry costing €1. Voters could enter a draw for tickets to the 2027 ceremony. Published figures said 5,009 people voted more than once. The result reflects fan preference, not a statistical comparison based on one shared scoring system or a single set of performance criteria.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi dominate the final list
Cristiano Ronaldo 2008 season took first place, Messi’s 2012 campaign finished second, and Ronaldo’s 2017 season came third. Messi’s 2023 campaign ranked fourth, followed by Ronaldo’s 2016 season in fifth. The top ten featured five seasons from each player, underlining how heavily the pair shaped the modern Ballon d’Or conversation. The result will not settle the Ronaldo-Messi debate. It does show that fans placed the 2008 Ronaldo campaign above Messi’s astonishing 2012 year in this vote. United supporters can point to the goals and trophies; Messi fans still have the 91-goal year.
