Martin started from pole and led the early stages, with Marquez choosing to stay close rather than make an immediate attack. The Ducati rider eventually made his move on lap 11 and took the lead. Marquez then managed the race from the front. Martin remained within reach but could not find a way past, allowing Marquez to take his sixth Grand Prix victory of the season.
Marco Bezzecchi finished third after a late battle with Enea Bastianini. The Italian held on to the final podium position, with Bastianini taking fourth. Raul Fernandez was fifth, followed by home rider Ai Ogura in sixth and Pedro Acosta in seventh. Diogo Moreira crashed out of the main race after finishing second in Saturday’s sprint. Marquez had won that sprint as well, completing a clean sweep of the Japanese weekend.
2026 MotoGP: Marquez closes the championship gap
The result has brought Marquez to 331 points, only two behind Martin’s 333. Bezzecchi remains third with 284 points. Six rounds are still to come, meaning the championship battle is now entering a crucial stage. Marquez had lost ground in Austria but responded strongly in Japan. His victory was particularly notable because he missed the Le Mans and Catalonia rounds earlier this season while recovering from foot and shoulder surgery.
The Ducati rider said taking maximum points from the weekend was important. He admitted the race was difficult while sitting behind Martin but felt his pace would be strong once he reached the front. Martin also acknowledged that Marquez had been the better rider on the day. The Aprilia rider said he had ridden almost perfectly and felt confident about his package for the rest of the season.

2026 MotoGP: A crucial weekend for the title race
Sunday’s race was held under cooler, cloudy conditions after a sunny start to the day, but rain stayed away. Marquez’s measured approach proved effective as he waited for the right opportunity before taking control. The victory also gave Ducati another significant milestone, with Marquez delivering the manufacturer’s 100th MotoGP win under general manager Luigi Dall’Igna.
